After you’ve perfected your Master of Ceremonies (MC) style, you can relax a little. You’ve been doing it for a while, and you know what works. If it’s not broken, don’t fix it, right?
Well, not quite.
Fact: styles change. Sometimes a little, sometimes a lot. An MC’s look must be relevant in order to communicate professionalism and style. If you want to keep getting those bookings, you’ve gotta keep appealing. It’s career suicide to stop refining your MC style. An MC should be as well-dressed as the best-dressed person in the room.
Your stage clothes don’t talk, but they speak volumes about your personality and personal brand. The most successful MCs know they look appropriate and elegant at every event, because they update their wardrobe around twice a year. Your words should make people giggle – not your outfit.
1. SWOT analyse yourself regularly.
As your career develops, your professional goals and personality will change. Regular Personal SWOT Analyses will determine your changing Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats. You’ll identify your current objectives and clarify what makes you special – your secret sauce. From there, you can update your personal brand to reflect the awesome MC you are today.
2. Go see a professional Image Consultant.
It may be time to visit a professional Image Consultant. Explain your job, personal brand and dream clients. They will determine your main shade according the colour mix of your hair, skin and eyes. Show photographs of realistic styles you want to emulate. Your Image Consultant will use their expertise to create style plan-sheets just for you. You’ll walk away knowing exactly how to pull off your updated style to perfection.
If you can’t get to a professional Image Consultant, conduct thorough internet research.
3. Go to the most elegant clothing stores and boutiques in town.
Don’t be afraid to spend money. Your MC outfit is an investment. It should be very high quality and durable. Show the staff the results of your consultation or internet research, then let them dress you. Try out different styles, ask lots of questions, and listen to their expert opinions. When you just know that you’ve found the right outfit for you, buy the whole ensemble. Yep – everything, right down to the socks. This will erase stressful time-wasting when you prepare for events, because your outfit will be beautifully coordinated already.
4. Age gracefully.
You will get older. There ain’t no stopping it, so choose to embrace it. As an older MC, it’s essential that you refine your style to match the person you are today. It may be time to take that shimmer-effect suit jacket to the charity shop.
My top tips for guys? As you get older, you must eat less and exercise more. Swim. Walk. Brush your teeth and gargle. Moisturise more. Don’t bother dying your hair. It becomes a time-consuming, expensive, dead-end road. Everyone will know anyway. Besides, salt-and-pepper is very attractive. Just look at George Clooney!
“I’m a big believer in the idea that you can’t try to look younger. You just have to try to look the best you can at the age you are.” – George Clooney.
5. Don’t rely on advice from your friends or family.
Don’t expect your family to be objective – they love you just the way you are. They might not have the foggiest idea about what’s fashionable for an MC these days. Avoid the frustration, avoid making a mistake, and go to a pro.
